With financial and social resources and investment running dangerously low, Desborough in Northamptonshire sits in constant need of fresh energy, new ideas and strong determination. The young adults of Desborough URC aren’t afraid to answer that call.
The church began with an ageing congregation with an inward-looking focus, but some youth leadership training, with the support of East Midlands Synod Children’s and Youth Development Officer (CYDO), Jane Henderson, opened up new ideas and possibilities for engaging with families and young people in the area. By opening themselves up to understanding and responding to the needs of the youngest in the community, the church was able to encourage more people, who perhaps wouldn’t have got involved otherwise, to see a role for the church in their lives.
Now, with regular community choir rehearsals, tea and toast sessions and plans to set up a Messy Church, the young adults and their families are bringing hope to Desborough URC with an open and inclusive attitude where nothing, especially money, should exclude anyone.
With this newfound sense of purpose, the church feels much more confident about promoting itself in the community, through local businesses, local stores and even other churches, not in competition, but to offer something of relevance in addition.
Depravation continues to be a real struggle, but the energy and commitment of young adults to the growth of a church that caters for people’s everyday needs, as they grow as everyday disciples of Jesus in every aspect of their everyday reality, continues to breathe new life into the church and the community.
Who are the young people, young adults and young families in your community? How could your church help them develop as everyday disciples of Jesus? Contact us to learn how the Children’s and Youth Work Office and your synod’s CYDO or equivalent can help you.
