On a visit to Central URC, in Derby, Simon Peters, Walking the Way Project Manager, learned how reflection and prayer led a congregation into community action.

Realising that many older members of the community lived in isolation and with mobility issues, the church developed a weekly ‘3Fs’ group which focuses on fellowship, food and fitness.

Every Wednesday, the church hall is filled with pensioners who choose from a range of activities that includes chair exercises, listening to music, socialising and meditation.

Simon said: “It became very clear over lunch with some of the volunteers and participants that the 3Fs acts as an important lifeline for many older people in the community. It gives them a chance to socialise, keep active and build a community of encouragement with each other.”

Food for the group is sourced locally, with nearby businesses keen to support such an important service for the community.

Although 3Fs takes place in a church building, faith is not mentioned explicitly. But, it is run by caring Christians who go the extra mile to demonstrate the love of God to everyone who comes, regardless of their own beliefs or background.

Simon added: “In looking around the everyday realities of the people in its community, Central URC Derby has found a way to be the loving presence of Jesus in the lives of some of the community’s most vulnerable people.”

What are the needs of some of the members in your community? How might your church live the life of Jesus today more with them? Leave a comment or question on our Facebook page.
