Andrew Roberts, author of Holy Habits, launched his series of Holy Habits study books in Birmingham on 27 January. The United Reformed Church’s Walking the Way Project Manager, Simon Peters, talks about what makes the books a valuable tool for personal use and community life.
The study guides, all available to buy from the URC’s online store, expand on the ten habits of discipleship covered in Mr Roberts’ original book. The ten habits are: biblical teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, sharing of resources, service, eating together, gladness and generosity, worship, prayer, making more disciples.
The Holy Habits series is a key resource of Walking the Way, the URC’s focus on lifelong Christian discipleship and mission. By looking at each habit in turn, the books explore how we can better recognise the presence of Jesus in all areas of our lives, seeking to play our part in building the kingdom of God, whoever we may be and whatever we may bring to the table.
There are no short cuts or quick fixes for today’s Church or society, and Holy Habits does not seek to offer any. The point is to involve as many people as possible, to think and plan strategically, to be clear in our purpose, to work collaboratively, creatively and consultatively.
At the event at Selly Oak Methodist Church, Birmingham, people shared the diverse ways in which the material had already impacted individuals and churches. The clear advice was to ‘keep practising’ as habits, when properly established, are difficult to break.
Two more launch events are scheduled, in Bristol on 10 February and Wolverhampton on 28 April. Contact Andrew Roberts directly to book your place.
