Members of the United Reformed Church (URC) are being asked to consider helping the people of Indonesia, whose lives have been devastated by natural disasters.

Following an earthquake and tsunami on Sulawesi on 28 September 2018, and the devastation caused to the Sunda Strait on 22 December 2018, people who have lost everything are in desperate need of water, food, shelter and access to medical care.

The Methodist Church in Britain and its international development and emergency relief organisation, All We Can, with which the URC collaborates, has set up an appeal to raise vital funds.

In September, a deadly earthquake struck Indonesia which triggered a tsunami. Waves, more than three metres high, swept across the land, destroying almost everything in their wake. More than 2,000 people lost their lives, more than 40,000 people are displaced and up to 1.5 million have been affected. Supplies of food, water and shelter continue to be urgently needed.

In December, a tsunami, believed to be caused by undersea landslides triggered by new eruptions of the Anak Krakatau volcano, crashed into villages on the strait that separates the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra. This tsunami wave destroyed buildings and homes along the coast. Hundreds of people are injured, and the death toll continues to rise as the full scale of the disaster becomes clear.
