Shire GreenShire Green United Reformed Church in Yorkshire Synod has become the first church to receive a plaque and certificate marking their engagement with the new Children and Youth Friendly Church scheme.

When the time came to renew their Child Friendly Church Award, the congregation at Shire Green began the new, more reflective process with support from their synod.

They are a small Sunday congregation of approximately 10 people but they are outward looking and support their local community throughout the week in toddler group, after school club, munch-day church and girl’s group as well as casual engagement with children and young people in the community.

The church is often asked for support by local families who are experiencing difficulties, particularly with emotional and behavioural support for children through Play Therapy sessions.

They also welcome people of all ages from the local community to Café Valentine for food, refreshments and activities for everyone. This is a very informal café where multigenerational friendships are developed.
